love
G never ceases to amaze me with his wonderfulness. I've been going through a pretty rough time at work over the past few weeks and he's been the most supportive, loving partner anyone could ask for. Yesterday I frizzed out because I need a bit of alone time, so tonight he found a friend in need of some help gave me the place all to myself. I love him more than I ever thought it would be possible for me to love another human being. He just gets me like no one else ever has. Sometimes the joy of it all brings tears of happiness to my eyes. I don't need to say more than that right now, but I thought it was important that I put that in here somewhere. After all, love is the strangest drug of them all.Labels: dose of mikey, g

wilde day
Yesterday afternoon we saw the Importance of Being Ernest. Don't listen to critics who seem appalled that someone might actually add their own visual embellishments to an already great play. While some of the scenes do seem over the top, I believe Wilde himself would have appreciated that on some level. The dialogue is as brilliant as ever and all the actors give fine performances. I especially enjoyed Judi Dench's ability to speak EXACTLY like I always imagined Lady Bracknell should. I'm not saying it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's not nearly the travesty some reviewers claimed it to be. Definitely worth a watch.Labels: dose of mikey, random review

valhalla
Went out and bought ourselves two backpacks today, as well as some other camping gear. Love the name of the backpack - Valhalla - but who would've thought it'd be so expensive to rough it? Anyone looking to make a donation to the get Mikey to the Canyon fund should contact me here. :) In other news...finally selected a new pair of glasses. Overall a rather productive, albeit expensive, day.Labels: dose of mikey

supai!
G just booked our trip to Supai. A whole relaxing week down in the Grand Canyon close to the home of the Havasupai Tribe. I'm looking forward to it, but wondering how I'll fare for a week without any connection to the outside world via the computer or cell phone...or hair gel even! I'm most looking forward to sitting by the falls and reading one of the books I'll pack in with me. Pure bliss!Labels: dose of mikey, linkage

soup and hope
Lately, my sisters out in Massachusetts keep coming to mind. Hoping that they're doing well. Not sure if it was actually her doing, but would like to thank Stargirl for sneaking the following quote into my life this past week. It was just the sort of thing I needed to hear.
How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. - Anne Frank

three paths
In any given situation, there are three courses of action you can take.
Do nothing. Change the situation. Change your mind.
The first option works best if you're happy in a situation. The second is, unfortunately, not always an option for everyone. The third, and perhaps the most difficult for many people, requires you to change your attitude towards something. To see it as a challenge instead of an obstacle. To see it as exciting instead of scary. To be happy that we had an experience instead of mourning the loss. When you're unhappy in a situation, and option two is not possible, go ahead and try option three. Unless you're scared of happiness. I personally like to take a pinch of option two and mix it in with number three.
Let me leave you with a quote from one of the sages of our time, Kermit the Frog. "Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending." (Full lyrics here.)
For those of you who worried, thank you. I'm feeling much better now.Labels: dose of mikey, linkage, spirit

ps
So, I'm a little more mellow now, and having just logged back in to reread the "just ducky" post, must acknowledge that most of it is directed to the voices in my head versus any particular individual in my life. Yes. I have voices in my head. Perhaps this site should be called,"A Slow Descent into Madness." Probably already taken though. The web is, after all, a place for everyone.
Good night.Labels: dose of mikey, travel

just ducky
Just got back from a show where I got to see a good friend act for the first time in ages. The material wasn't the best, but it didn't pretend to be a Tony award winner. More importantly, the company before and after the show were great and reminded me of how much I enjoyed hanging out with them back in SF. So I was in a pretty good mood, and excited to get online again to see if I could finally get logged in for an update on my trip.
Unfortunately, I was just sideswiped by an unforeseen email that pissed me off. So I'm going to give this up for today and just get drunk instead. Not a very mature attitude I suppose, but I get so tired of being the good boy sometimes. Organized Mikey. Good Mikey. He'll do it. He's good at that sort of thing. Oh, no, he can't have meant what he said at least three times this past month. No, not at all. We probably weren't listening to him. After all, he does babble on and on sometimes. So very boring, who'd want to listen to him. And now we're upset, so let's piss him off too. Let's make him feel like shit today out there in his fancy hotel room. I mean, he's probably been enjoying himself too much. The bastard deserves to be taken down a peg or to. And email's great for that. No chance for him to respond back without looking like even a bigger jerk. And he is a big jerk. Did we mention that he's dumb too? Oh, yes. He doesn't ever do anything right. He stays in a job that's slowly driving him crazy and just wasted a whole paycheck thanks to not being able to add up his taxes correctly two years ago. Should have just slit his wrists back in the 80's when he had the chance, but he couldn't even do that right. What an ass. But don't worry. He doesn't have any feelings anyway. None of this would ever affect him, not that it should. Only a stupid person would take it so personally. Whoops. He is stupid isn't he? Oh well.
I know, I know, "Self Pity, party of one - Your table's ready." I'll go sit down now and have that drink...though I feel oddly better having typed that all out. Ahh writerapy!Labels: dose of mikey, rant, travel

arrrgh!
Well, isn't that nice. I've been trying to log in for the past three nights to tell all about my exciting time here in New York, but the computer wouldn't let me link through. Tonight it finally works, but I've got m sitting on a couch in the hotel room and really want to spend the time with her. Will have to wait till tomorrow when, with fingers crossed, I'll try to log in again.
Spoken by a 70something woman sitting one table over from us at a diner on the upper west side, "Angela and her husband are in their mid-30's. You know, just starting out." What a nice thing for this slightly frantic 30something to hear.Labels: blogging, seen and heard, travel

bitten
We saw Spiderman last night. If you haven't already gotten sucked into the hype, give it a miss. Tobey Maguire's looking good and the actors do a fine job, but the dialogue they're given falls flat. The movie couldn't seem to decide whether it was going to take itself seriously or not. (Tobey calling out for his Uncle Ben got a pretty good chuckle.) Also, the special effects didn't impress me all that much. On the fun side, we got to see the line for Attack of the Clones. (which was sneak peaking at the AMC 1000 at midnight) I think both Lena and I felt an odd twinge of guilt for not being in the line ourselves.
In other fun news, received a lovely garden from M today. Can't wait to see her this weekend!

odd
Today, just a little something weird. Warning: I wouldn't get weird at work, or with impressionable children nearby.
You can find a site that's fun for kids...and adults who're still kids at heart here. (I hope M has a chance to share it with little e.)Labels: linkage

shake it up
Tonight we had one of the biggest quakes I've felt since moving out here. 5.2 - slightly southwest of Gilroy. Lasted about 10 seconds or so. (Which doesn't sound long unless the house is shaking around you at the time.) It was long enough for G and I to look at each other trying to figure out if we should move to the doorway. I did. G, being born and bred here, got back onto the couch and enjoyed the rest of the ride. A few lighter objects shook enough to topple, but nothing heavy. I had been sitting in front of my laptop updating spreadsheets. I took it as a sign from the universe that it was time to relax.
In other news, I scanned another favorite postcard! Will do my best to get Dude's up tomorrow.Labels: dose of mikey, g, linkage, san francisco

sparks
We went out and got a grill today, so tonight we had barbecued chicken. The wind's been strong lately and it was quite a job keeping the sparks from flying out and causing some sort of tragedy ala Mrs. O'Leary's cow. (The meal afterwards was worth it though.) It's rare that I wish for a backyard, but this was one of those times, back steps are not ideal for grilling. I guess that living in a true suburbia vs. this urban lowrise version does have it's positive sides.
On a similar note, we went for a walk yesterday and ended up over in the middle of the Castro. It was only moderately crowded, but I found myself experiencing sensory overload: the people, the higher energy level. Seems that the past 9 months in a quieter neighborhood have had an effect on me. G pointed out that people are much more likely to acknowledge your presence over there, for good or bad. I'm not really sure which side of the hill I prefer, but I will say that I miss that feeling of connectedness that I used to get, just by walking out of my front door.Labels: dose of mikey, g, san francisco

land o port
Phoenix is moving north. Shared dinner and conversation this evening and realized that even though we don't see him that often these days, I'll miss having him close by.
In other news FINALLY put up the first bit of the postcard pages. Oooog. I don't know what this CSS stuff is that other bloggers get all excited about, but maybe I ought to check it out. Coding all that gave me handcramps and bloodshot eyes. At work tomorrow they're going to think I partied late into the night. In my own strange way, I guess I did.Labels: dose of mikey, linkage

rejuvenate
Called in tired today. Well, I didn't tell them that, but I had it coming to me. Contemplated calling in yesterday, but decided not to since there was a lot of stuff happening...so imagine my surprise when I came in to find that my manager had called in. This left me the only one to get everything done. Today it's my turn and it's been very worthwhile. Something nice about spending a whole bonus day with G. Very relaxing and much needed. Must do this more often.Labels: dose of mikey

kiss me like a man
I just read in The Advocate that Imperial Teen has finally come out with a new album. Yay! They're one of the few bands I've made a point of seeing over the past few years. Saw them twice at the Folsom Street fair. That was a trip. Sun beating down on all of us. Half naked folk in leather singing along as well as your standard alternateens. Keep hoping they'll come back to SF and a new album might be just the thing.Labels: dose of mikey, linkage

back steps
Not much to say today. Work was extra hellish this afternoon with deadlines crashing down all around and general confusion amongst coworkers. It's days like this that I really wish I could stay home, sit on the back steps and read a nice book in the sunshine. A little bit of Christmas, the whole year round.Labels: 1000 words, dose of mikey, sharketing

banana bell
Found out that Jennifer Connelly is going to be in the movie. Took a walk by the set around 3 to see if I could see anything, but it looked like they might be finishing up with that particular block since they've reopened one side of the road. Only interesting bit is that the tipping cable car's been joined by a SWAT mobile, an ambulance and a smashed up car. There was a group of three film people sitting on the edge of the cable car napping and enjoying the afternoon sun. Would have made for a nicely surreal picture, but I didn't have a camera with me...and if I did, I suspect someone would have snatched it away afraid that I'd post it somewhere on the internet. They'd be right of course.
Here's something else I saw recently...in our kitchen.

It pleases me.Labels: 1000 words, dose of mikey, linkage, san francisco
