gay thanks

Spent yesterday lazing around until about 2 and then scrambled to help G prep the desert dishes for Hug's dinner. Arrived at 5 and proceeded to stuff ourselves for several hours on everything from California salad to mussels and crab. Spent most of the time watching movies on Hug's ginourmous new television.

Y Tu Mamá También and then Chicago. I've seen YTMT several times and find something new to appreciate every time. Chicago, while being one of the best stage to screen translations I've seen, is only wonderful if you love the music. I don't love the music. I don't hate it, but the movie didn't open up my eyes to something new the way several friends told me it would. As far as screen musicals go, I'm still firmly in the Moulin Rouge camp. I love po-pomo.

Things to be thankful for; gay marriage edition:
i have a family who truly wished my partner and i could be with them yesterday
i have many good local friends who invited us to spend the day with them yesterday
i have many good far away friends who would gladly have had us over yesterday
i have a partner who's happy being a bit nontraditional on thanksgiving (eg: crab and pear galette)
i may someday get to call my partner husband in the eyes of the law

Quote for the day:
"There ought to be two distinct kinds of marriage: one governed by the state with rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the church with rules enforced by her on her own members." C.S. Lewis - Mere Christianity

harvest

Took off a bit early from work and spent the afternoon adding a few pictures to the sidebar of the archive and just generally fiddling with the format. The code was a bit messy, so I swept as much as I could under the rug.

So much left to do, but G's in the kitchen making yummy smells and I think I'll head down that way for a while.

swab

Had a lazy, but productive Sunday. Ended up spudding on the couch in front of History Channel International. They had an interesting something on about a Roman excavation in England and then this fascinating special - The Secret Life of Geisha. Pretty in depth history and lots of facts I was unaware of.

Earlier on, I managed to add an entry to the Incredible Adventure archive. Anyone have a scanner they'd like to donate? It'd really help spice up the side bar.

Realization of the day: A good cotton swabbing after a hot shower can be eargasmic.

turning tide

I feel the need for change in this blog, but I'm not sure what it will be. Don't worry loyal readers....(all five or six of you.) I'll still grace you with bon mots now and again, but they'll be in a different form. More beautifuller.

Then again, maybe that's a crock and I'll just keep chugging along with random updates.

r.i.p. zip

Today I said goodbye to Zip. He's been with me since Scree and I parted ways 9 years ago. Scree and I had an uneasy bond. Never sure that we could trust each other.

With Zip it was different. We were solid. Got to know each other over a typically horrid New Enland winter and then packed up for the west coast. He took me all the way across the country carrying just about everything I owned, and then suffered patiently through the indignities of San Francisco street parking without complaining once. The past year was hard. We knew his time was coming, and I don't blame him for finally conking out. I'm just grateful that he stuck around as long as he could.

I'll miss him.

oooog

Well it's back to my old workaholic ways. Late nights and a bit too much stress. Somewhere along the line I picked up a nasty stomach bug and I actually left work early to just lie in bed and moan.

Ooog...speaking of which, it's time to say hello to my porcelain friend again.

massahhhhhge

Before she left for the other coast JerseyGirl gave G and I a gift certificate for a couples massage at the Nob Hill Spa at the Huntington Hotel. Mmmmmmm. Very relaxey morning. The therapist was very good and really helped to get some of the "computer sitter" out of my shoulders.

Wish we could afford to do that everyday, but very thankful that we got the opportunity and will be looking back with happiness. Cheers to JG!

working for the weekend

Oh yes, I'm back to my work-a-holic ways. As much as I sometimes moan about work, I must find something about it satisfying since I'm willing to put in the extra hours and energy to do more than expected. Sure there are rewards, but they come at such large intervals that it's hard to tell if I'm really doing it for them or if I have some hidden masochistic streak inside me.

Anyway. Point is that it's been another long week, yet I'm on a bit of a high from working so much. Odd that. (and apologies to Mikey Upstairs...I promise to call about the Rufus CD this weekend!)

Question of the day: Does everyone call them smashed potatoes now, or is this just a conceit of the Food Network?

surfing

A nifty site I stumbled across. Blog prose-poetry (or augery doggerel if you prefer.)
Eeksy-Peeksy

A fun way for any child of the 80's to while away a good half hour.
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago

And in honor of the eclipse this evening...
forever's gonna start tonight

NB: I was very dissapointed to discover that the video on the previous link wouldn't play. Truly one of the trippiest videos of the 80's...not to mention one of the first videos that rang a homo bell deep inside of me loud enough for me to truly have to admit it wasn't just a figment of my imagination. We're here, you're queer...come and join the party!

movie update

Just realized that after an insanely long dry spell of about 4 months, I managed to see TWO movies in an actual theatre last month vs. waiting for the DVD. It was nice.

Intolerable Cruelty was recommended by Mom and Dad while we were home. Very funny in a twisted way.

Die, Mommy, Die was recommended by planetout. Twisted in a funny way.

I recommend both and hope to see two more movies in November! (Dream big Mikey!)

results

Yesterday, my cubemate C and I called each other "Citizen" all day in anticipation of voting in the evening. (and a chance to leave a wee bit early) I'm happy to say that for the most part the results matched my voting sheet. Didn't get my candidate into the mayoral runoff race, (sorry Angela!) but Hallinan made it into the runoff for DA.

The only prop that passed, that I wish hadn't, was M. We already have panhandler regulations in place and it just goes too far. It also doesn't feel right to basically outlaw begging. Technically, under the new rules, Girlscouts could be fined for selling cookies at the corner of 18th and Castro. (of course they won't be, that's why this law isn't fair....just because a homeless person may not be as cute as a Girl Scout doesn't mean he/she has less rights to ask for money)

back to the garage

Just read through Props A-N for the upcoming election and my brain hurts. The voter information pamphlet is exactly 200 pages long. I think that pamphlets should not exceed 2-4 pages. 200 pages is a novella.

The good news is that the "pamphlet", along with a little online research, has made me feel confident about my choices for the three elected offices on the ballet and propositions A-M. (I got to Prop N and my head went numb.) I'll have another crack at it tomorrow during lunch and vote in the evening on the way home from work.

condoms and mayonnaise

Halloween weekend. On fright night itself, just before they were about to close off the streets to traffic, G and I made a quick trip down to Walgreens. Every street corner had a volunteer from STOP AIDS or a similar organization handing out a little safety kit. I could've sworn that they kept offering up "candy, condoms and mayonnaise", but G assures me that it was "band aids". I thought that I might've stumbled upon a new subsection of the community that I'd never heard of before. Mayo boys and girls! Kinky.

Snagged a pumpkin from Harvest and carved it out for the window. (that's how the kids know it's ok to stop by your house) Handed candy out through the window and wished we had Dude and T's hand to help give us an extra bit of stretch. Even though we're on the first floor, it's still a bit of a drop down to the sidewalk. Still, the kids seemed to enjoy the basketball aspect and would shout out "two points!" whenever we we managed to get it into the bags/buckets.

Later, after the party was in full swing just a few blocks away, we wandered around the Castro seeing all the costumes and dodging drunk folk....and then retreated to the safety of our apartment. I do like living back in the hood.
