dog days
Spent the weekend dog sitting for some friends over in Oakland. I'm not a big dog person, but this one is a nice exception to that rule. They also have a cat...who naturally loves me. I think I must've been a cat in some past life.
That's all. Not really in an updating mood tonight, but figured I better take five minutes to give a shout out to the ether.
What is the sound of a shout in the ether?

being brocolli
Finally watched LOTR: Return of the King this weekend. Four hours and pretty good. It skipped a part of the book that I wish we could've seen, but it probably would've made the movie too long even for a lazy weekend. (We've had the DVD from Netflix for almost two months now waiting for a good chunk of time to watch it during. About time we traded it in for a different one.)
Chatted on the phone for quite a bit with Dude on Saturday and then today with M. Nice to have conversations lying on the couch with a cup of coffee at my side instead of while walking through downtown SF on may way to the Muni after work.
Got inspired by the chat with Dude and went to Target today to upgrade our cooking gear for when we take him and Dudette camping. Dangerous place that Target. Everything's so well priced that we always end up getting a bit more than we planned on...but it's all good.
Watched Timeline tonight. Ignored by both the public and the critics when it came out, so I was suprised to find that it's a pretty good movie. (If you like your Action/Adventure Sword and Shield movie mixed up with a bit of Sci Fi.)
I liked it because it was more accurate to the period than I would've thought. The DVD also has some very nice special features that go beyond the usual regurgitation of the promo spots that would've aired on Extra when the film was first released. They do a good job of capturing what it was like to make the film and give some interesting views of just how much can still go into a movie set these days when you don't want to rely on CG.
I'm glad we started it early enough to watch them since they clocked about an hour all together. And now to bed.

saying no to the sun
I had an opportunity to travel someplace rather fabulous for work. (Easy work too, not hard work.) I say "had" because I turned it down.
Not sure why, but it feels like the right thing to do. I was hoping that typing it in might spark some sort of internal dialouge, but it basically boils down to the fact that I really don't want to go. But that's what puzzles me. Why don't I want to go? After all, this is a real boondoggle of a trip and there's no good reason for me not to go...except that I really don't think it'd be a good idea.
Odd that.

only connect
Have you noticed that people walking up out of the subway immediately put a cell phone to their ear? It's as if they need to make sure they haven't missed too much of life while they were underground. I do it too, so this isn't about me poking fun. I'm just wondering what odd instinct prompts us all to do the same thing. In other news, I'm sure I've used this entry title before as it's from Howard's End and one that runs through my head time to time. Never-the-less, it's appropriate for today, and why, why, why do I insist on handcuffing myself with silly rules?

Sack o' Tomato
Spent the weekend out in Sacramento with G's parent's. (Roseville really, but that probably won't mean much to anyone outside of Northern California.)
It was a fun visit, and the weather was a nice change. (It's actually summer there.) But the overall trip was a bit tiring. I looked forward to coming home and just acting like broccoli for a few hours.
Point being, we came home to find Six Feet Under, Little Britain and various other fun shows on TiVo waiting for us, and it made me so happy to know that I never need suffer through bad t.v. again in the pursuit of a vegetative state. Love that!
Also love the sack o' bell peppers, corn and other super fresh (and super inexpensive) organics we picked up in Dixon on the way home.

slapped
Those blondes, they have too much fun...and the rest of us are tired of it. What is it with them? Then again, get two of those brunettes together and things are just WAY too serious. That's why it only makes sense that marriage has always been between a blonde and a brunette. Sure, there's plenty of examples of couples throughout history who were both blonde or both brunette, but that proves nothing. We'll just sweep that under the rug and say, " But this is the way it's always been."
In fact, we're feeling too threatened. Let's enact a law declaring that marriage is defined only as a partnership between a blonde and a brunette. Yes, that ought to do it.
But what's this? Someone thwarting our law because it goes against ideas they say are laid forth in the Constitution? Blondes and brunettes MARRIED? Who gave them the right? (um…the constitution did, but never mind about that) Time for us to panic and fret until the state Courts rule that any marriages performed between folks with the same color hair are invalid. The joy of those couples, the years together, the song in their hearts at finally achieving recognition under our supposed secular government…invalidated. Let's sing in the streets because once again we've proven that WE are more equal than them.
Today many of my friends were slapped in the face because of a law that doesn't make sense. Today people who've been together as a couple for more years than most were told that they aren't quite as equal as everyone else.
I've gone from being sad to getting angry. Forget about ousting Bush in November. I want him impeached now. For crimes against the American people. For leading this country into an era of such insulatedness that we have become divorced not only from the reality of the rest of the world around us, but also from the reality of life within our own borders.
George W. Bush is an old man, with ideas even older than his father's. It's time for him to go sit on the porch rocker where he can quietly reminisce about the glorious reign his family once had over the world without causing the rest of us further harm.

m is for muni
Very tired. Very long days right now. Spring 2005 is colliding with Fall 2005 and giving me a big headache at work.
Left work late. Squashed onto a crowded Muni and heard the following coming over the speaker in broken English:
This no J like it say outside. This an M. M for Muni. It CRAZY this train.
A pause.
And folks, Muni love you! I know, you not love Muni sometime, but Muni love you!
I would like to say thanks to the unknown driver for putting a smile on my face and for reminding me of why I love living in San Francisco.

just a note
I do realize that the formatting of the posts has been a bit funky lately. Lately, it's been more important for me to get a post into the system than actually figuring out my way around the new Blogger formatting buttons.
Let's just say that the random font face/size helps emphasize that there's poetry hidden in the prose and leave it at that.
(Rat a tat tat.)
In other news: All you former lit crit/crit theory kiddies will groove on this site I found over the weekend. (as will most of you arty folk too) I'm linking to the family circus piece because I think it's brilliant. It's also the first thing in a long time that gave me a deep chuckle.
Be sure to click through the full series...and then check out all the other works by clicking artists projects in the upper right...or don't click, after all, I'm not the boss of you.

pause
The theme song from Cheers has been stuck in my head all day. Been online quite a bit this past week, but not blogging. Offline, but still on the computer, I've been playing with the Makin' Magic expansion pack for the Sims. Yes, it sucks time away just like television, but it works the brain a bit more than the other glowing box. Sometimes life needs to be about doing something cheap and cheerful to amuse yourself in order to save money, so I'm pretty happy with this course of action.
Of course I could write more too, but somehow I just haven't been in the mood this past week. I feel like I'm almost on the cusp of something. A bit like being on the far side of a wave as it rises. You feel the water tugging you up against the force of gravity. Trick is to paddle really quick to the crest and WOOOOOOOSH you're flying along.
Don't know that I have the energy to paddle right now. Might have to wait for the next wave.
That's the nice thing about the Ocean...there's always another wave.
Of course it's also true that you have to time that paddle to the crest just right. Paddling too fast or too soon just puts you too far past the near side of the wave where you're liable to be pounded down instead of forward.
Ah rationalization. I'm very good at it.Labels: dose of mikey, spirit, writing

tuesday morning
Nice to take a long shower on a weekday morning. Nice to sit in front of the glowing screen before work and let my fingers tiptoe across the keyboard. Nice to eat toasted slices of pear bread with a cup of coffee brewed right here at home. Nice to not race around finding shoes and shirt. Nice to not worry about sardinizing myself into the subway car. Nice to spend a few quiet moments with G.
Nice to not rush.
Because today I will watch socks being imortalized on film.Labels: dose of mikey, g, sharketing

womb
I remember getting out of church in the early spring and waiting around in the chill air outside for Mom and Dad to stop chatting with everyone under the sun. My favorite days were sunny ones, when we could ask for the car keys and go wait in the old Pontiac. Though the air outside was cool, the car's interior would be luxuriously warm having baked in the sun for a few hours.
I'd scrunch down on the seat and get drowsy looking up at the thousands of perforated dots in the ceiling vinyl. If I adjusted my eyes in just the right manner, the dots would start to multiply. Layer upon layer floating closer and closer to the tip of my nose.
If I could freeze moments in time, that would be one of them.
