so true

Found this over at WWdN a while back and it stuck in my head. Naturally, I went back to find it so I could share.

Somebody was once asked to define blogs. They refused and said:

I don’t care. There is no need to define “blog.” I doubt there ever was such a call to define “newspaper” or “television” or “radio” or “book” — or, for that matter, “telephone” or “instant messenger.” A blog is merely a tool that lets you do anything from change the world to share your shopping list. People will use it however they wish. And it is way too soon in the invention of uses for this tool to limit it with a set definition. That’s why I resist even calling it a medium; it is a means of sharing information and also of interacting: It’s more about conversation than content… so far. I think it is equally tiresome and useless to argue about whether blogs are journalism, for journalism is not limited by the tool or medium or person used in the act. Blogs are whatever they want to be. Blogs are whatever we make them. Defining “blog” is a fool’s errand.

So true.

bus to nowhere

Missed the work shuttle bus this morning and decided to take a chance on Muni. Got to the bus stop, turned and saw a bus approaching. It had no number on it and for a short moment I was ready to curse out yet another Not In Service bus. Then, before the F*cking Muni could fully form, I noticed that the sign on front said Nowhere in Particular instead of Not In Service. The bus was totally empty and had no interior lights on, but it stopped for myself and several other folks waiting at the stop. I got off at my normal stop, but I came very close to playing hooky and just seeing where the bus would take me.

It’s things like this, and the "Muni Love You" Man that make me almost forgive them for cramming too many people on the morning train and then getting stuck in a tunnel at least once a week.

Almost.

hidden away

The geography of San Francisco allows for many hidden parks and neighborhoods that, even after more than a decade, I have yet to discover.

Found one of them last weekend while it was still spring.

i'm not sure what the real name is but
i'm calling it secret canyon park
spring flowers

every once in a while the camera decides to get creative
purple greg

a little friend we met along the way
good luck charm

last stop:Church Street in Noe Valley
to pick up some German dinner
YUM!
Yum!

searching for umlauts

For the record, the plumbing's back to normal. Gott sei dank!

That last bit's in honor of Mom who's got a birthday next week. Being her super hero son with powers of procrastination that defy reason, I just made the card tonight. Chances are that it will not arrive in time for the actual day next week and I'm making it up with a smattering of German.

Ich wünsche dir alles Gute zum Geburtstag!

Note: The Babel Fish told me that "dir" should be "Ihnen", but I chose to ignore it...I really went there to borrow some umlauts.

backed up

There's scribbled notes on the front door telling us that the plumbing is backed up and that there's no water use until tomorrow morning. Late tomorrow morning.

Ah well. At least we have a roof over our heads. Our brief taste of San Francisco summer is done and the wind blows cold again, but we are warm inside these walls. Things could be much worse.

odd words

Found this fun meme over on yaniblog.

Here are the rules:

Grab the nearest book
Open the book to page 123
Find the fifth sentence
Post the text of the next 3 sentences (#5,6,7) on your blog, along with these instructions.
Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! Just grab what is closest. No cheating.

The closest book to my computer is one I've admittedly never read called The Outlaws on Parnassus. G rescued it from a sidewalk in Cole Valley a while back, and it eventually migrated to my computer/writing shelf. My sentences are:

...This day, because it was the first day of her French frock, she regarded as her début in the dizzy life of capitals. She existed in a rapture of bliss, an ecstasy which could feel no fatigue, either of body or spirit.
This writer could probably have given as exact a description of any dress worn by the lady.

Wonderful.

The book has a blurb on the cover that reads, "Delights and devices of the novel from Homer to Orwell." Which explains the odd coupling of sentences.

Side note: When G originally picked up the book he could see Parnassus Hill. Synchronicity.

lost and found

Something went wrong and I lost my February entries for a few days. The whole month disappeared and managed, somehow, to take the last day of January with it.

It's taken care of, and all I can say is that the guys over at logjamming are super cool to deal with. If you need a site hosted, check them out.

All this means that you may've missed the pictures in the previous entry below, and that makes me sad.

I'm so vain, I probably think this blog is about me.

new view

Normally when I want to get high in San Francisco, I go to Twin Peaks. That's them over in the distance underneath SoonToFallDown...I mean Sutro Tower.

yes that's G standing over to the left

Yesterday, the city proved that even after 11 years, it can continue to surprise me. G and I were driving through the Mission when I commented that I'd never been up to the top of Bernal Heights. He immediately abandoned our food shopping plan and drove us up to the top. We wandered around for a bit, and I was amazed that I'd managed to miss this vista for over a decade. Quite beautiful...although these signs did give me pause.

ummm...okay

I'd like to add, do not taunt happy-fun-radio-tower

This sign, on the other hand just made me happy.

peace

Oh, and I would apologize for the bad pun up in the first sentence, but then you might think that I'd never do it again.

happy blogday

Today this blog is 4 years old. I like that it's also Groundhog Day...which grew out of Candlemas and/or St. Brigid's Day which both owe a bit to the Pagan Sabat Imbolc.

The halfway point between winter and spring.

peace of cake

I met Brian in college. T and I were driving by on our way to CVS and she noticed him walking in the weather. (not raining really, but it had been and was at the nasty point inbetween mist and rain where an umbrella is only useful to test puddle depth)

He was "gasp!" gay, or so said the rumors. Her suggestion that we offer him a ride scared the pink right out of my closeted gay self, but we ended up driving him back to his dorm.

T and I both came out officially after college. Hmmmm, maybe it IS contagious.

Seriously though, his courage to officially come out while still in school inspired me to start being more honest with myself and with the people I was closest to. Thanks Brian! (and thanks for sticking with me through the ups and downs since then...you are a true friend and I'm lucky to still have you in my life)

He's over in my blog links now as Peace of Cake. For those of you who know him, he's just as funny and thought provoking as ever, for everyone else...what are you waiting for? I mean, I know I'm fascinating and all, but this entry's finished now.
