crossed wires
Something wrong with connection at home, so posting this quickly from work. It may be that the pictures below of baby dude growing up will have to continue to amuse you all over the weekend.Labels: blogging

line for sale
Ever get a song stuck in your head? I have a similar problem right now. Every once in a while a line from some unwritten story comes to me out of the blue and gets wedged in my mind. Currently it's the following:
He had an exceptionally large nose that seemed to have been made primarily for the purpose of snorting cocaine.
Currently writing an elaborate fantasy piece and a short story about a practical joke that goes wrong. No place for the line in either of those.
Any takers? I'll let you have it cheap.Labels: writing

happy dudeday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DUDE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DUDE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR DUUUUUUUDE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DUDE!
In honor of that special day when I stopped being an only child, I've scanned in a little series of brotherhood through the years.

Note: In search of a recent picutre with Dude, Dudette, G and myself. (Plenty of pictures with two or three of us, but since one of us is usually behind the camera I couldn't find one with all four of us which is really what I wanted to end this series with.) If anyone has one, I'd love to get a copy.Labels: 1000 words, dose of mikey, looking eastward, shout out

movie set city
Walking to Muni this evening, I decided to take a bit of a detour and climbed the steps up to the second level of Whaleship Plaza and walked on through to the second level of the Embarcadero centers. Between 5 and 6, it's still pretty busy up there, but I didn't leave work until around 7 and it's different then. So empty compared to the streets below where pedestrians were still bustling about and cars honked at each other. Quiet too. Funny how going up just one level helps to mute the noise of the city.
Call me a geek if you want, but I often imagine I've stumbled on to some backlot movie set when I'm alone up there. Everything in place and waiting for the director to yell, "Action!"
Tonight it was an introspective indie that won only mild praise at Sundance.Labels: dose of mikey, san francisco

feeling green
Went to bed early Friday. Too tired to join in any of the festivities offered. Decided to make up for it last night and partied like it was 1996. Sadly, I'm not 26 anymore. I've spent the better part of today recovering which involved staying in my pajamas and playing computer games all day.
Actually, not a bad way to end the weekend.Labels: dose of mikey

shiny red car
I think I'm at a point in my life where a parallel me in a strange universe to the right of what's visible would be making a rash purchase.
Yes, it's almost shiny red car time.
But I'm not a shiny red car type of guy.
What's a sensible silver car owner to do?Labels: dose of mikey

work perversity
Of all the perversities that Corporate America has thrown at me, the following bugs me more than any other: The more you get paid, the ruder you get to be.
(You also get to rewrite history, forget about any part you may've played in a perceived mistake and later act as if nothing happened at all. All annoying, but the rudeness bugs me most.)
Now, if there were truly a correlation between amount of work done and salary earned, it might make all of this a little easier to take. The sad truth is that the true work is often done in the trenches and usually more than once since TPTB delight in yelling out different directions every day.
The hardest thing about being closer to the top? With every step upward, there's a smaller number of necks to choose from when the guillotine gets hungry. /rantLabels: rant, sharketing

inland empire
Spent the past few days in the Inland Empire. Which sounds nicely exotic to folks who live outside of Southern California, but is really just a nickname for this area here.

Some would argue that the map of the Empire should also include San Dimas which is a bit off of the northwestern edge of this map that my Googlesearch found. I would agree. After all, having spent some time there in one of the malls, I can confirm that Bill and Ted would've been true teen royalty back in the day in that part of the kingdom.
That being said, I'm currently in a Phoenix, AZ hotel room and should really be dealing with work emails instead of blogging so I didn't have time to make a better version via Google and Photoshop. Perhaps I will in the future since Inland Empire would make a mighty fine title for a short story. The people there are a very pretty purple mix of the red and blue dichotomy that the media would have us believe makes up the rest of the U.S. and a tale or two would be interesting to tell.
Oh, also, I love maps.Labels: 1000 words, dose of mikey, sharketing

me me meme
Why another meme? Because I find them to be a fascinating phenomenon. Oh, and because I'm sitting in a hotel room feeling bored. 1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4. Hotel Services Book: With more than 300 days of sunshine, enjoy the outdoors during every season.
2. Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What can you touch? The edge of the desk.
3. What is the last thing you watched on TV? Oscar recap.
4. Without looking, guess what time it is: 10:30
5. Now look at the clock. What is the actual time? 10:42
6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear? Television. Distant roar of traffic on I-10
7. When did you last step outside? What were you doing? 9PM: Coming back to hotel from work.
8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at? Secret Thoughts of Stuffed Animals
9. What are you wearing? A Hotel Robe
10. Did you dream last night? G and I were on a beach looking for shells.
11. When did you last laugh? In the rental car coming back from work.
12. What is on the walls of the room you are in? Sappy portraits of entryways done in a half hearted Bob Ross paints Monet style.
13. Seen anything weird lately? The aforementioned paintings.
14. What do you think of this quiz? Different enough from the standard question meme to keep me interested.
15. What is the last film you saw? The first half of SpongeBob Squarepants. (before we fell asleep the other night)
16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy? A home in SF, a home on Cape Cod. A little old fashioned corner bookstore that wouldn't make much (or any) money, but would make me happy. Presents all around.
17. Tell me something about you that I don't know. I enjoy the scent of skunk in the distance. (not too close, but far away I find it pleasant)
18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do? I'd arm myself and trusted folk around the world with N Guns. (That's Niceness Guns for those of you who might not be watching Bewitched reruns on TVLand.)
19. Do you like to dance? Yes.
20. George Bush: Dangerous Puppet.
21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her? Charlotte
22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him? Stephan
23. Would you ever consider living abroad? Sure.
24. What do you want God to say to you when you reach the pearly gates? Good job!
25. 4 people who must also do this meme in THEIR journal: I don't believe memes should be forced. Anyone who feels like it. Labels: memes

green pen
Oh green pen...Greeny Greeny! Writing on my sticky note pad so fine a line.
I wish sometimes I could be you, with your precise edge and happy color, but I can only wax rhapsodic about your wonderfulness and barr my ears to the coworkers who call me odd.

flat
When you let all the air out of a balloon, it seems to loose its beauty. Closer examination of the flattened rubber reveals an object that is beautiful in a different way; delicate folds and a mysterious powdery substance that leaks out from the inside.
Besides, it's fun to stretch between your fingers and create a snapping noise when you let go. Labels: writing
