panoply is the new plethora
I remember the first times I encountered plethora. It sounded cultured and exotic to my preteen mind. Soon after, I made an attempt to use it in the Tallahassee game and was rewarded with attention from my playmates. At least, that's what I remember. It may be getting twisted up with my memory of us using the word dolt in a way that really pointed to the fact that I could be a pretentious prig when I wanted to be.
To digress for a moment: The Tallahassee Game originated as The Town Game, a game in which we all basically pretended to be adults with fun jobs and homes. I, of course, owned a boutique hotel AND an interior decorating business. The "hotel" was in actuality a tree that gave me pretty conistent bumps and bruises. (In case you aren't aware, it's rather difficult to climb a tree while carrying an elaborate binder filled with swatches and paint chips. Stereotype, party of one, your table is ready!)
At some point, we realized that the name Town Game lacked oomph, thus the rechristening. Tallahassee was a name that sounded, to our young New England minds, like a wonderful and magical place where the sun always shone and everything was exciting. Besides, Tallahassee rolls off the tongue in a fun way. Hmmm...a bit like plethora does actually. (Managed to come full circle on that one, didn't I?)
As years passed, plethora seemed to pop up everywhere, and suddenly EVERYone was using it. It's no longer exotic, but I still do love it so.
So, what's that got to do with panoply? Seems that lately, it's been sneaking into my life more and more. Popping up in books, news articles and even on television. Not in the more common impressive display sense that I'm used to, but in the protective cover/suit of armor sense that I actually had to look up.
You wait and see, there'll soon be a plethora of folk using panoply.

work rears it's ugly head
Twice a year I get really busy and a bit stressed out at work. (That sound? That's G saying, "Ha! A bit stressed my elbow!)
I'm in the thick of it.Labels: g, sharketing

connect the dots
Had a pleasant weekend, but won't bore you with the details of us finally having Michael and J over for a mini BSG marathon on Friday to finally start watching the third season. Then we saw J again the next night for dinner and Running With Scissors. No, I won't bore you by mentioning all that, but I will bore you with some random reviews.
Running With Scissors surprised me because I ended up liking it. I had been prepared to love it when it first came out, but allowed myself to be swayed by the mixed reviews it got. Still interested, but went into watching it prepared to be a bit dissapointed.
Now, it definitely isn't for everyone. It's a bit drama/dark comedy, and it's a bit choppy (but intentionally so.) Some reviewers thought the movie relied too heavily on popular music of the late 70's, but I really enjoyed how the songs helped tell the story. The use of no sound during pivotal scenes really helped counterbalance those other scenes that relied heavily on the music to help move the story along. I thought it was pretty brilliant.
The acting was pretty great all around with another performance by Annette Bening that reminds me why I love her as an actress. If you like dark comedy and can handle a narrative that asks you to connect some dots here and there, then give it a looksie.
Oh, and just to keep it in perspective, I haven't read the book yet so my review isn't colored by that. Normally I have a harder time accepting a movie if the books already permeated into my subconscious.
As for Battlestar Galactica? Still one of the best television programs on air today.

trust your gut
So, over the past months, I've been slowly going through all my old entries and tagging them with an appropriate label. Came to this one here in which I puzzle over an odd decision I had made, and realized that my not going on the trip was just another example of why I should always follow my instincts.
See, the boondoggle of a trip turned out to be a big bad mess that's still talked about as one of the worst ever. I narrowly escaped.Labels: dose of mikey, sharketing

you may not know meme
TNTP tagged me on this.
Four things you may not have known about me! (but probably do if you're a regular reader of this blog)
A) Four jobs I have had in my life:
1. Paper Boy
2. Ice Cream Scooper
3. Parking Attendant
4. Writer for local GLBT Magazine
B) Four movies I would watch over and over:
1. ST: First Contact
2. Star Wars (original theatrical release)
3. Big Business
4. Labyrinth
C) Four books I have loved: 1. Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
2. Dragon Song - Anne McCaffrey
3. The Mouse and His Child - Russell Hoban
4. Harry Potter - J.K. Rowling I know it's the obvious choice, but with the release of Book 7 having just been announced, I'm all giddy again.
D) Four places I have lived:
1. Weisbaden, Germany
2. Weymouth, MA
3. Quincy, MA
4. In my car (while crossing the country)
E) Four TV shows I love:
1. Lost
2. How I Met Your Mother
3. The Amazing Race
4. CBS Sunday Morning This last one's thanks to Tivo...don't think you can be calling me before noon on a Sunday.
F) Four places I have been on vacation: 1. Germany
2. Austria
3. France
4. Hawaii
G) Four of my favorite foods are:
1. A nice, rare to medium-rare filet mignon with asparagus and small portion of lightly cheesed macaroni on the side. Must be served with a slightly oaky Cabernet.
2. My Mom's lasagna
3. G's squash soup with home made G Bread on the side. G Bread is a variation of sour dough that makes regular sour dough look like wonder bread. It is, quite likely, the most delicious bread in the universe.
4. G's Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie
H) Four places I would rather be right now:
1. I'm actually pretty happy right now where I am
2. But wouldn't mind a jaunt back to Weymouth, MA
3. Or a stroll down the Champs-Élysées
4. Still want to get over to England and Scotland someday
I) Four friends I think will respond first:
1. I don't usually tag people
2. Besides, Michael tagged me first, and he's the one who I normally tag
3. Chris might, if he's bored, but no pressure
4. Anyone else want to surprise me?Labels: memes, shout out
