ohrwurm oracle

Like recurring dreams, these songs often get stuck in my head...seemingly with no connection to outside events. No matter how many times I manage to shake them, I know they'll be back in a month or two.

Animals Went in Two by Two

I've Been Working On The Railroad

One Day More (from Les Misérables)

Making our Dreams Come True (yes, as in Laverne & Shirley)

Notwithstanding the fact that Sexy Back has recently joined the above, I sense a common theme of repetitive striving tinged with hope. Perhaps I'm making the connection a bit deeper than it needs to be, but it really describes how I've been feeling lately: tinged with hope.

cloudbusting

I saw my first robins of spring this evening on my way home from work. They were hopping along in the grass at Park. It's the first time I remember noticing robins here in SF.

As a child, I thought them to be a sign of good luck and good things to come. I suspect a connection between the time of their appearance on New England lawns and the end of the school year which was now near enough to start anticipating. Whatever it was, I got the warm fuzzies tonight all over again.

Kate Bush, singing in my head:

I just know that something good is going to happen.

day late

Yesterday was Shutdown Day. A social experiment in which people were encouraged to not use their computers for a day.

Ironically, I read about it today for the first during a random surf. G and I were very much not shut down yesterday as we spent most of the afternoon playing Dwarf Complete. An addictive Zelda-ish adventure game.

Oh well, maybe next year...or maybe next week. People say it's good to go outside during the weekend and it just might be true.

herald mage

I recently reread Mercedes Lackey's Herald Mage trilogy and was a bit surprised how much I enjoyed myself. Not because I hadn't liked the books the first time around. I remembered myself quite enjoying the experience. At the same time, I recall wishing that the tale had either ended a bit differently or allowed the characters happiness earlier on. I had also been disappointed in the way the author treated sex. As if the camera shifted focus from couple to crackling fire...and faded out. (At the time, I had just come out and wasn't quite as experienced as I wanted to be. The vagueness frustrated me.)

This time, because I'm older and less tied to certain romantic ideas, I fell more easily into the ending and the long path they took to get there. As for the sex, I've certainly had enough experience since then. The allusions made were adequate enough for me to draw my own conclusions about what was going on just off page.

missed apostrophe

Check out the Eats, Shoots & Leaves site to see just how much you care about punctuation.

I'm a 92% Stickler. (I missed one apostrophe.) Truth is, I'm rather disappointed in myself for that. I must care about punctuation much more than I do about spelling. Maybe that's because mispelling something doesn't usually alter the meaning of what you're writing. Missing punctuation, as demonstrated in the title of the book, certainly can.

That said, defiantly and definitely are NOT the same word.

mother's day comes early

If you know my Mom, you already realize what a wonderful and strong woman she is. She is definitely one of the blessings I have in my life.

If you don't, you can now find out at her new website! In it, she tells of her two decade struggle with Inclusion Body Myositis, a disease for which there is no cure and relatively little treatment. There's still many little tweaks we'd like to make, but I think it's safe to consider this a Beta launch. Check it out!

m friends

My very good friend m called me last week. It was in the middle of a busy work day, but she wasn't calling to have a long conversation, just to connect for a minute and allow us to hear each others' voices. Crazybusy workweek with lots happening last week, but that's what I remember. The smile I got on my face, and the immediate relaxation my shoulders experienced from that simple, quick "Hi!"

A week or so before that, another m was in town on business. Crazybusy as we both are, we made the time to have breakfast together and had a wonderful time catching up. Later we had a nice email exchange expressing gratitude that we've stayed in each others' lives for all these years. That's what I remember from that work week.

I believe we have the power to focus on whatever moments we want to, and that's what our memories will be full of later in life. I'm glad I have these to look back on instead of dwelling on spreadsheets and office politics.
