At the begining of the summer, G and I planted little sunflower seeds. These ones survived the rabbits, wind and groundhogs.

what i did on my spring vacation

This afternoon I put on my purple polo and had G take my picture in front of the lilacs. Why did I have G take my picture in front of the lilacs? Well, I've been thinking about changing my profile photo, but honestly, the lilacs with the purple shirt look a bit too matchy mathchy so we'll have to try again later. That said, for those of you who haven't seen me lately:

Not a huge change, but I'm wondering if the title in the sign is too subtle.

Also finally added a link to Dudette's site. About time!

a life of crime...or interviews

No new news on the job front, so G and I are contemplating turning to crime. We have heard that, contrary to popular belief, it actually does pay pretty well. Problem is that we're both rather good at the core which makes a life dedicated to evil a bit of a stretch.

Maybe we can apply to be comic relief villains instead. You know, the kind that they used to fill up the last five minutes of an episode of Superfriends after the headlining Justice Leagers had done their stuff. We could be two brainy scientist guys whose ulitmate goal is to rule the carnival. We'd plan to have free rides and icecream for life, but end up thwarted by the clever Wonder Twins and their sidekick Gleep.

Or maybe we could just be late night talkshow hosts. Big heads seem to be a prerequiste for that job too.

M & G give Conan a run for his money.

where did those days go?

Logged in and realized that it's been almost a week since I last posted. Since my current unemployed status would seem to offer me time to actually come in here more often I need to think back.

Well, we had a weekend. Spent Friday night hanging out with Stuffed Animals and his hilarious wife. (she always has me giggling) This is becoming a Friday night habit I'm not willing to break.

Somewhere in there the weather started to succumb to global warming - or maybe just a shift in the jetstream - and we've been in the 50s ever since.

Spent Monday eve with Dude and Dudette, which was lovely and mellow and involved good food and good wine and great company. In fact, I think I need to start using a new nickname for them as a couple...Dudzes? The Almost Wed? Cute Young Couple? Maybe I'll keep it simple and call them the Sibs. That's what they are after all.

Headed down Cape on Tuesday so Mom could look at a new chair. Ended up spending some quality time afterwards on the Sandwich Beach boardwalk. (and enjoyed the oddly warm, albeit windy, weather)

Greg And the Beach Tree
G with the Sandwich Beach Christmas Tree

Yesterday I had a nasty misunderstanding with a good friend, but that's all over now though it made me realize that I'm skating on rather thin ice mentally with the whole money issue and need to keep tabs on that to prevent cracks.

In an attempt to thicken the surface a bit, I did turn to the best therapy I know of and finally typed in the first chapter of the ghost story that's been bubbling around in my brain for a while now. We'll see if I actually do something with that, but it was quite nice to sit up towards the top of the parentals' garden yesterday and tap away at it.

Today I'm just glued to the computer doing the odd job search and finally updating in here. That and playing Scrabulous on Facebook. Only on my first game and already pleasantly addicted to the whole idea.

Oh, should mention that I've been accompanied on all of the above, except the misunderstanding by G. (though he did offer sane and calming comments when I mentioned it all to him) The best bit about not having a job right now is getting to spend more time with him. Also, he's been a saint over the past few months with all he's doing to help out and keep a big smile on his face when I need to see it and really deserves a special shout out for being such a good monkey.

three, is the magic number

Today, for the first time, I got a little panicky about the move thing. Not about the whole pick up my life and transfer it three thousand miles away part of it that one would guess I'd panic a bit over. No, I started worrying about boxes. Will we really have time to pack it all away in just a week?

The answer is, of course, yes. If we do a little bit each day, we should be fine. Anyone want a slightly used Ikea Couch? You cart it away and it's all yours.

In other news: Got a little nostalgic for the fun times I've had in the Haight while doing an errand today, so I snapped this as a little reminder.

sweet sounds of fall

So true. I regularly read the REAL LIFE comic, but this one is too good to keep to myself. It spoke to me deep down in the core of my being. This time of the year always gives the same excited/giddy feeling I get when clickety clacking up the first big hill on a rollercoaster. Oh, and it has a cool Tivo reference. Click the comic to be taken to the larger version on the RL site.

a little slice of crazybusy

Been in photoshoot prep hell for the past few weeks. Much easier process than it was in past years thanks to having an assitant manager. This means that I no longer have to pull 3-4 weeks of 12 hour days in order to get everything together, but it's still pretty hectic.

Talked about leaving with my manager. While, like any boss, he has seemed a bit crazy at times, he has also taught me much of what I know about how business works and has always been there for me over the years. He's offered to help me find interim jobs within the company if needed which is ultracool and a bit of a weight lifted from the moving scales that I've been trying to keep balanced.

Which brings me to the big day. Moving truck is tentatively scheduled to pick our stuff up on October 11th. We'll then spend a night in our empty apartment and then head east to Roseville for a last minute visit with G's parents and then northeast to Idaho to see Craters of the Moon. Then, if he isn't too busy playing golf, we'll head to Lincoln, Montanna for a quick hello to Uncle B.

I've always wanted to see Mt. Rushmore and that's on the way, so why not. Also hoping to stop in Wisconnsin to try some cheese. Please don't tell the California Cows as they're already quite sad about our departure.

In between now and then there's friends to have dinners with a wedding to attend and the aforementinoed photoshoot to manage. This always sounds glamourous because people think of this borderline NSFW image. But really it's a lot of this and this.

the rest & best of the weekend

So, after it's inauspicious beginning, the weekend improved dramatically. G and I did end up spending some time in the gayborhood enjoying the vibe. Had steak frites at Chow out on the patio, wandered into Harvest for some birthday cupcakes, and then went to the movies. Shrek the Third, while amusing, doesn't quite stand as tall as the first two.

Deciding to make it a full on movie night, we got home and watched Marie Antoinette. Loved it. I remember it getting some mixed reviews, but can't quite imagine what the fuss was about. Was it deep? No. Did it tell me anything I didn't already know? No. Did it really make me want to see Versailles? Yes.

I gave myself today off as a bit of a birthday present. We made mac and cheese for lunch, did a bunch of crosswords and then went over to Baskin Robbins to cash in our free birthday cone coupons. Ended up down at Ocean Beach because it seemed like the right place to eat ice cream. Gorgeous day today. Walked up and down the beach well into the evening just talking and showing each other interesting flotsam and jetsam. We stayed long enough to watch the sunset and then took our chilled selves home to warm back up.

Reminder to those of you out there experiencing that event called "summer"...while there were some brave folk out there jumping in the waves, I had on jeans and a sweatshirt during our walk and never felt too warm.

All in all, turned out to be a pretty wonderful weekend.

mini reunion

M was in Oakland for a wedding this past weekend and I got a nice little bookend visit with her on either side. We caught up with A and L (and their adorable daughter).

Mini Reunion 2007

This past weekend was actually our 15th year reunion, but none of us was on the east coast to celebrate. Kinda nice that the timing coincided.

In other M news, we talked...a lot, but it always seems that we end up with a million more things to say when it's time to part. She treated me to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. Actually the very first time I've been since coming to SF 12 years ago. Wonderful place, but a little tourist heavy. Still, we had a great time.

hello from the harbor
originally written May 21st at 4pm...stupid trojan!

Well, I'm heading out to the airport on the harbor ferry. My super short trip back to Boston has been exhausting but worthwhile.

Thanks to the superb art direction of Dudette, we have a great picture of Gram with all six grandkids. That makes me happy. Had a good time at the wedding catching up with aforementioned cousins, and later got to spend time with Mom and Dad.

There's a bit more to tell, but the ferry's out on open water, so I'll leave it for later and enjoy the ride.

vacation admission

Okay, I admit it. I meant to update this site every day last week.

Didn't happen.

I did get a lot done with bills, doctors and house stuff.

And more importantly, caught up on many of the programs Mr. TiVo had recorded for us.

And had five martinis in a row without worrying about having to be anywhere the next day. mmmmm...olives.

And slept in late...sooooo late.

And ate whenever, whatever and wherever we wanted.

And spend too much money at IKEA buying little things we've meant to pick up for ages...and then had a romantic dinner in the cafe. mmmmm...meatballs Even had a view of the Golden Gate bridge and the sunset...under an overpass sure, but I believe you can find romance in any location if you concentrate on your partner instead of your surroundings.

Oh, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time towards the end of the week playing the demo for Lego Star Wars 2 (The Original Trilogy).

And of course, we went on our annual pumpkin trek to Half Moon Bay....followed by the traditional meal of Hawaiian food. mmmmm....chicken katsu curry

Went out to Pleasanton today in order to pick up a cargo box for the roof of our car.

I've said it many times before, but it bears repeating: craigslist rocks!

Anyway, saw this along the way and had to share. The sun wasn't in the ideal spot for photos, but these two should give you a general idea of what it looks like.

csf 33

Decided to venture out into the 33rd annual Castro Street Fair. Quite glad that I did. It's been a long time since I stood so close to a stage and just listened to good, loud music.

Finding Mercury was playing...and yes, that's a rather old gentleman in a black jockstrap grooving along to the beat up there in front.

Love those white socks!

No other pictures. I spent most of my wandering just enjoying being in the middle of a crowd and sipping on a beer. A bit odd being there all alone, but G wasn't up for it today and my other Castro friends all seemed to have fled the 'hood. That being said, it's good for my shy self to get out there once in a while and remember that I can still face the world on my own.

Note: In search of a recent picutre with Dude, Dudette, G and myself. (Plenty of pictures with two or three of us, but since one of us is usually behind the camera I couldn't find one with all four of us which is really what I wanted to end this series with.) If anyone has one, I'd love to get a copy.

inland empire

Spent the past few days in the Inland Empire. Which sounds nicely exotic to folks who live outside of Southern California, but is really just a nickname for this area here.

inland empire map

Some would argue that the map of the Empire should also include San Dimas which is a bit off of the northwestern edge of this map that my Googlesearch found. I would agree. After all, having spent some time there in one of the malls, I can confirm that Bill and Ted would've been true teen royalty back in the day in that part of the kingdom.

That being said, I'm currently in a Phoenix, AZ hotel room and should really be dealing with work emails instead of blogging so I didn't have time to make a better version via Google and Photoshop. Perhaps I will in the future since Inland Empire would make a mighty fine title for a short story. The people there are a very pretty purple mix of the red and blue dichotomy that the media would have us believe makes up the rest of the U.S. and a tale or two would be interesting to tell.

Oh, also, I love maps.

new view

Normally when I want to get high in San Francisco, I go to Twin Peaks. That's them over in the distance underneath SoonToFallDown...I mean Sutro Tower.

yes that's G standing over to the left

Yesterday, the city proved that even after 11 years, it can continue to surprise me. G and I were driving through the Mission when I commented that I'd never been up to the top of Bernal Heights. He immediately abandoned our food shopping plan and drove us up to the top. We wandered around for a bit, and I was amazed that I'd managed to miss this vista for over a decade. Quite beautiful...although these signs did give me pause.

ummm...okay

I'd like to add, do not taunt happy-fun-radio-tower

This sign, on the other hand just made me happy.

peace

Oh, and I would apologize for the bad pun up in the first sentence, but then you might think that I'd never do it again.

Spent Mom's Day out in Sacramento with G's parents. On the way home we traveled through a rather postmodern development.

This isn't photoshop, it's real.

green day

Totally forgot today is St. Patrick's day. As a rather large beer fan who's getting larger in the middle because of it, this was a bit odd. True, I'm not Irish, but...OH HOW MUNDANE! Rather unimpressed with my ability to write anything worth saving in the ether. The past two weeks at work have been insanely busy and my mind has turned to pudding. Not fun pudding like chocolate or butterscotch either. An odd pudding, like pistachio or spotted dick. Of course, Spotted Dick is semi-appropriate for today.

Beavis, he said 'Spotted Dick.' Heh heh, heh heh.

Okay, a bit better, but odd pudding names are a cheap laugh. You only owe me a quarter for that one.

waking up

Yesterday B came over and hung out with us for the afternoon and into the evening. I realized that we haven't just hung out for almost four years now. We spent an afternoon together about two years ago, but I was overly concerned with her psychological welfare at that particular point in time. We didn't speak very often on the phone, and I had allowed the different social situation she chose to live in become suspect in my mind. In retrospect, I believe jealousy and self centeredness got the best of me. (Annoying how clear hindsight can be.)

I even managed to imagine a slight conspiracy against myself by other members of her family. Were they listnening in to our conversations? Was she getting my messages?

Sorry Bun, I've been a dork.

I also realize that the not-so-nice first meeting she and G had four years ago was something I'd been fretting about. It hurt me that my future husband and best friend might never get along, but instead of confronting that emotion and arranging a followup meeting, I just buried it deep down inside and allowed the physical distance between B and myself to be a good excuse for ignoring that particular elephant in the living room.

You heard it hear first folks, sometimes I can be a big idiot. We all had a great time this weekend and look forward to seeing her a few more times while she's in town.

thanks to D for snapping some candids...especially this one

in the moo

Tonight we're having some leftover sirloin steak. While Rainbow Grocery has become our one stop shop for most culinary needs, good meat had been a hard to find item. Then G found Guerra Quality Meats over on Taraval

So good, and highly recommended for anyone able to get themselves over there. fulfills most of our meat-eating needs.

In other carnivorous news: Tomorrow I'll be dining with Bun for the first time in years. While I confess to a slight trepidation because of the new folks I'll be meeting, I'm truly looking forward to partaking of a home grown ham. They raised it on their farm up north, and I'm honored to have been invited to this particular feast.

In honor of the occasion, I'm sharing our psychedelic pig with the world.

DOUBLE FEATURE: triple giggle and pimp pine pictures

Click through to GAWKER to see an article that made me giggle thrice. (Thanks to Michael for pointing out this particular story.)

1. I like the idea of myself as a "sartorially-challenged, shut-in computer nerd with a sicko crush on Scarlett Johansson and the skinny guy from The O.C"

2. Directly below the article they have advertising banners flicker in and out from various national brands and the following plug: "Gawker Media - Gawker and seven other weblog titles - brings a young and influential audience to brand advertisers." That's either sadly hypocritical or deliciously ironic, but it's funny either way. (I vote for the latter. I've always liked Gawker...and several of their seven other weblog titles.)

3. Well, you'll have to guess at the third giggle, but if you know me it'll be pretty obvious once you read the article.

In other news: I spent most of last night organizing two years worth of photos. There were a lot of pictures to go through, but the time consuming part of the task became remembering all the good times and retelling stories with G. This one in particular had a lot of good associations with it.

Imagine my surprise when a closer examination revealed a frolicking Sponge Bob sprinkling his special brand of love around my old stomping grounds.

Belated thanks to Dude and Dudette for the doubles you gave us at the last barn bash. Can't wait for the next one!

ups and downs

I left work today in a bit of a funk. Plugged into music for the commute home and went from funk to a rather pleasant dazed feeling. Felt a bit like I'd gotten stoned, but without the drymouth and munchies.

Got home and took a brief nap before walking to my doctor's appointment.

On the way I saw an orange tree...of sorts.

Read an interesting piece in a back issue of the New Yorker: Ice, by Thomas McGuane.

The doctor kept getting called out of the examining room to discuss a patient he'd just admitted to the hospital for some scary brain problem. I stared at the wall.

He's the first doctor I've felt comfortable with in a long time, but my blood pressure was still a little high, and the interview process to record my medical history brought me down again as I was reminded that I need to quit smoking, eat less, excercise more, etc. (That etcetera covers quite a bit that I'd rather keep to myself right now.)

Now I'm home again. Posting these pictures and telling a little story of my day perked me up a bit, but I'm still haunted by the theme from Growing Pains.

Show me that smile again, (Oh, show me that smile)
Don't waste another minute on your cryin',
We're nowhere near the end (We're nowhere near)
The best is ready to begin.

santa's woods

There could've been several entries tonight. I think I'm facing a bit of a psychic bottleneck due to a lack of time for writing.

the mistaken trick - a tale from my past, but perhaps a bit too ribald for the gentler reader (i do try to put most things through the e filter)

raises in strange places - which sounds ribald, but is actually an odd tale of my workaday world

teleportation troubles - a plea to inventors to finally create one so that i can visit the east coast on a regular basis without boarding a plane

LOST - ooooh addicted as of last night

but now i've lost the urge to type....the mouse elbow is begining to twinge and i've realized just how hungry i am and how late it is

so i'll leave you with some pictures of last weekend to ponder - we chopped down our own tree

the day after yesterday

Watched The Day After Tomorrow yesterday. For an action/disaster movie, it was pretty good. Or is it just that Jake Gyllenhaal is the hottest thing to hit acting since Johnny Depp?

Anyway, not much else to report. I'm at the end of the biannual insane weeks at work and heading into a couple of merely crazed ones. That being said, G and I did carve out some time for a pumpkin evening.

further adventures of the fantastic four

Not a lot of time to blog as we're about to head out the door to experience the Castro Street Fair, but wanted to post a few more pictures for y'all.

this picture would makes more sense if you could see the
nifty sculpture that they're dancing next to, but
the artist came out and asked that we not use the
photos in any public arena...so I'm respecting that..

Posts will be thin on the ground this week as we want to spend our time hanging with Dude and Dudette.

A little glimpse into the past few days.

saucy

About a month ago G bought a portable Weber Grill for us and, I must admit, my initial skepticism about how useful it would be has been blown away.

Totally worth it! We went for the authentic charcoal model vs. the quicker gas version. The grill is small enough that the coals only take about 1/2 an hour to heat up to cooking temperature, though it's large enough to cook a meal for four people at once. Not to mention that there's something more primal about cooking over coal and mesquite vs. gas. So last night we had chicken with the world's best marinade. I'd tell you the recipe, but G's entering it into a marinade contest and I don't want to spoil his chances by giving it away to the world just yet.

In other worthwhile expenditure news, we rented Mind Walk this weekend because it's not available on DVD. It's a dialogue movie. If you're only into action and Hollywood candy, you'll want to give it a miss since it's a film that requires you to think. So, run, don't walk to the local video store and rent this film. If anyone can tell me who to contact to get this film on DVD, I'd be most appreciative. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to finally use my Borders gift certificate to purchase the book it was based on: The Turning Point by Fritjof Capra.

bitten

We saw Spiderman last night. If you haven't already gotten sucked into the hype, give it a miss. Tobey Maguire's looking good and the actors do a fine job, but the dialogue they're given falls flat. The movie couldn't seem to decide whether it was going to take itself seriously or not. (Tobey calling out for his Uncle Ben got a pretty good chuckle.) Also, the special effects didn't impress me all that much. On the fun side, we got to see the line for Attack of the Clones. (which was sneak peaking at the AMC 1000 at midnight) I think both Lena and I felt an odd twinge of guilt for not being in the line ourselves.

In other fun news, received a lovely garden from M today. Can't wait to see her this weekend!

back steps

Not much to say today. Work was extra hellish this afternoon with deadlines crashing down all around and general confusion amongst coworkers. It's days like this that I really wish I could stay home, sit on the back steps and read a nice book in the sunshine.

A little bit of Christmas, the whole year round.

banana bell

Found out that Jennifer Connelly is going to be in the movie. Took a walk by the set around 3 to see if I could see anything, but it looked like they might be finishing up with that particular block since they've reopened one side of the road. Only interesting bit is that the tipping cable car's been joined by a SWAT mobile, an ambulance and a smashed up car. There was a group of three film people sitting on the edge of the cable car napping and enjoying the afternoon sun. Would have made for a nicely surreal picture, but I didn't have a camera with me...and if I did, I suspect someone would have snatched it away afraid that I'd post it somewhere on the internet. They'd be right of course.

Here's something else I saw recently...in our kitchen.

It pleases me.

memorable art

I'm not quite sure what this means, but there are two pieces in the SFMOMA that always stick in my mind after I've left the building. One is a Picasso. For some unknown reason, this painting always fills me with a sense of calm.

Pablo Picasso, Nature morte "La Cafetiere"
(Still life, "The Coffee Pot")

The other...well, see for yourself.

ETA This originally linked to a a page at sfmoma.com featuring Koons' Michael Jackson and Bubbles. The link is now dead, but a quick Google Image Search will give you pretty much the same image - although with safe search off, you might not want to try it at work. The whole thing still disturbs me on various levels, even as the pop culture maven in me cackles with delight.

It's still the 9th, but there's been some sleeping in-between and a whole lotta figuring out of things - both on this site and with G. We had a very nice morning...er, afternoon doing crosswords and generally chatting about the state of our little world. Happiness!

My parents have a wonderful backyard with a bench halfway up the hill that you can sit on and contemplate life. Sometimes I wish that it was easier to get there from here...there's times I'd like to just sit up there with G and watch the world go by.
